STYLE GUIDE

For photo inspiration please have a look at our Inspiration Board on Pinterest here :

What To Wear for your Newborn Session

I highly recommend wearing clothes that you feel comfortable in, you want to be able to snuggle with your baby and not be worrying about what you are wearing. You also want to look like yourself.

COLOUR

Colour can make a huge impact in your images. White, cream, beige, neutrals and pastels are always a safe option if you are unsure. They also look beautiful with babies skin. Neutrals doesn’t mean just greys and browns. There are neutrals of every colour (mustard yellow, forest green, burnt orange).

Please keep in mind that having a colour palette of 3-4 colours looks best. You can see some colour palettes for inspiration on our Pinterest board at the top of this page. I would be keeping in mind the colours of your home and you can even incorporate that into your colour palette too.

TEXTURE & CLOTHING THAT FLATTERS

Textures are so beautiful in newborn sessions, they really add depth and richness to the images. Lace and knits can look beautiful on Mum.

Long maxi dresses can be incredibly flattering in images, they elongate your body.

WHAT TO AVOID

Try and avoid words and busy patterns if you can. They draw the attention away from the baby and onto the clothing. Please keep in mind if you have a patterned dress or similar in mind that can be completely ok if it is not too loud and eye catching, sometimes it can help add a pop of colour or break up all the other outfits in the family.

It can be a little unflattering when sitting on the lounge or bed if you are wearing a short dress, just something to keep in mind.

Please be careful with fake tan, rarely does it look good in photos so if you feel like you need one, make it super light. Fake tan comes out quite orange in images, and it doesn’t go well with babies skin.

BABY

At this tiny size, babies look best in a simple white or neutral onesie. I do not recommend outfits or dresses for newborns.

If you have any sentimental or special blankets or swaddles please have them out.

DAD

Jeans and a t-shirt always looks good, or a button up top. roll the cuffs to be more casual. V-neck shirts and sweaters look great in photographs.

HAIR

Wear your hair down.

In real life we see all angles and movement of your hairstyle. This isn’t the case with photos. You are only catching one angle at a time and if your hair is in a ponytail, you may look like you don’t have hair. An exception to this rule would be a topknot or messy bun if it is up high enough to see from the front.
